Office for Racial Justice

The core mission of the Office is to address the sin of racism by providing parishes and schools with the tools to initiate and enhance their efforts to combat racism. Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I., established the Office for Racial Justice July 1, 2000. The Office is a direct outgrowth from the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Task Force on Racism as a response to the beating of Lenard Clark in 1997.

by Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.

On April 4, 2001, the 33rd Anniversary of the Death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. issued DWELL IN MY LOVE, A Pastoral Letter on Racism. In this Pastoral Letter Cardinal George summarizes the various forms of racism present throughout our world and offers suggestions for fighting it. "Jesus transcends, challenges, and transforms everything that divides the human community," George writes. "He calls us back to a communion with one another, a unity, which reflects the communion of God's own Trinitarian life."

Catholic Schools

Catholic schools exist primarily to evangelize about the Good News of Jesus Christ and educate Catholic students for the Church’s mission. All are welcomed who identify with and seek to live by values in harmony with the Gospel and its preferential option for the poor. Catholic schools provide students an opportunity for educational Excellence in the Catholic Christian tradition. Catholic faith-learning communities commit to help each student develop his or her potential for conscious, responsible living, healthy relationships and leadership. The Catholic school communities act as good stewards to make schools Vital, affordable, and accessible across the Archdiocese.
