Canonization of Kateri Tekawitha
Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, who will be canonized in October, was born in Auriesville, NY, the site of the North American Martyrs Shrine.Canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha.
Born in Ossernenon village (Auriesville), she moved to a village in Fonda, NY, after the death of her parents and brother from the smallpox epidemic. There she nourished the simple faith that she had received from her Christian mother before the age of four, when she was orphaned. At the age of 20, she requested baptism from Jesuit missionaries, and later fled the persecution of her village, travelling to Canada to a Christian settlement. There she grew in her love of God and developed a special love for the Eucharist. The “Lily of the Mohawks” died at the young age of 24, and will be the first Native American to be canonized.
